artist statement: [collect]ive breath

I’d like to invite you to close your eyes for a moment and think about your breath.  Are you aware of the subtle shifts of your lips and the gentle movement of your chest, inhaling and exhaling?  This movement is familiar yet often goes unnoticed.

I am observing this subtlety and movement to create objects that might inspire and heighten our awareness of our breath.  The etymological connection between breath and spirit has led to my exploration of breath as a means of self-awareness within a larger context of a collective experience.  I am approaching my work in three ways: interactive pieces that invite the wearers breath, pieces that attempt to capture the aesthetics of breath and conceptual recordings of breath.
